Graduation Wishes: What to Write in a Graduation Card

The certificate is not the achievement. Finishing is — usually after a stretch that was longer and considerably worse than anyone outside it saw. A graduation message that congratulates the qualification skips the part the person actually lived through, and they notice, even if they cannot say why the card felt thin.

Writing about the effort rather than the result also makes the message usable far more widely. A trade qualification, a part-time degree finished around a full-time job, a course someone restarted after dropping out — none of those fit the gown-and-ceremony version of this note, and all of them are more common than the version greetings cards are written for.

One thing worth deliberately leaving out: the question about what they are doing next. It is the single most common thing written on these cards and the single most common thing graduates report dreading. Below, the messages are grouped by recipient and filterable by tone and length — the short set is worth a look if you are signing a shared card.

How to choose

Four questions that decide most of it. Each answer leads somewhere specific.

  • You watched them do it

Name the hard part you saw. "You wrote most of that dissertation on night shifts" is worth more than any congratulation.

    Heartfelt graduation wishes →
  • You are signing a group card

Two lines, complete at that length. On a shared sheet the short message is the considerate one.

    Short graduation wishes →
  • They are family

You can reference the whole arc — the false starts, the year it nearly did not happen — in a way nobody else can.

    Graduation Wishes for Family →
  • They are a colleague who studied alongside work

Recognise the double load explicitly. Doing a qualification around a job is the part their family may not have seen.

What not to write

Five habits that make an otherwise sincere note land badly, and what to write instead.

  1. Asking what is next

Avoid"Congratulations! So what is the plan now?"

InsteadLeave the question out entirely and let today be finished: "You got it done, and that was not a small thing. Enjoy it." Plenty of graduates have no plan yet and are tired of saying so.

  2. Congratulating the certificate

    Avoid"Congratulations on your degree!"

Instead"Four years, two house moves and a pandemic in the middle of it. Congratulations on actually finishing." The obstacles are the achievement.

  3. Comparing to your own experience

Avoid"Enjoy it — university was the best time of my life, it is all work from here."

InsteadKeep it on them. Nostalgia from the sender turns their milestone into a prompt for your own story.

  4. Grading the result

Avoid"A 2:1 — so close to a first! Still, well done."

InsteadNever mention the classification unless they raised it. "You finished, and that is the part that counts" avoids a wound you may not know is there.

  5. The generic quote

Avoid"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams!"

InsteadOne true sentence about them beats any quotation: "You are the most stubborn person I know, and it has finally paid off properly."

Where it is going to be read

The same news needs different wording on a card, in an all-team email, and in a direct message. Length is only part of it — so is who else sees it.

A group card

Twenty people, two lines each. Short is the format working, not a lesser effort.

  • You got it done. Genuinely well done.
  • Nobody worked harder for this. Congratulations.
Short graduation wishes →

A card from family

The one that gets kept. There is room for the whole arc, and you are the only person who can write it.

  • We watched you nearly give up twice and carry on anyway. That is the bit we are proud of, more than the certificate.
Graduation Wishes for Family →

A message from work

Recognise the second job they have been doing on top of the first one. Most people at work will not have seen it.

  • Three years of studying on top of a full week here. Congratulations — I do not know how you managed the timetable.

Common questions

What do you write in a graduation card?
Congratulate the finishing rather than the qualification, and name one difficult thing you know about how they got there. Leave out any question about what comes next.
What should you not write in a graduation card?
Anything asking about their plans, anything mentioning the grade unless they raised it first, and any comparison to your own student years. All three are extremely common and all three land badly.
How short can a graduation message be?
Two lines is genuinely fine, especially on a shared card. A short message that names something real beats a long one built out of quotations. Short graduation wishes.
What do you write for a mature student or a part-time degree?
Name the second job. Someone who finished a qualification around full-time work, or around a family, did something structurally harder, and almost nobody says so on the card.
What do you write for a trade or professional qualification?
Exactly the same approach — effort over certificate. Avoid language borrowed from university ceremonies, which can read as faintly patronising applied to an apprenticeship or a professional exam.
Is it different if they did not get the result they wanted?
Yes. Do not mention the result at all, and do not offer consolation they did not ask for. Congratulate the completion plainly: finishing is a fact, and it is the one worth marking.
