Heartfelt Welcome to the Team Messages

Warmth in a first-week note is doing one job: telling someone who has not yet done anything that they are not on trial today. That is genuinely useful. What is not useful is enthusiasm so high that it becomes a standard to live up to — a new starter reading "we have heard incredible things" now has something to fail at before they have opened a file.

These messages are written to be reassuring without setting a bar. They tend to offer something concrete: where to ask, what the first week actually looks like, who to find at lunch. Warmth that comes with an offer is warmth someone can use.

Use the shorter set on the main welcome page if you are one of many people messaging on day one. A new starter's first morning is already a wall of names, and five long warm notes are harder to read than five short ones. Save the longer version for the end of the first week, when there is room for it.

Permission to take the first weeks slowly

“Welcome. The first fortnight here is mostly acronyms and half-remembered context, so please do not measure yourself against how quickly you are picking it up. Everyone took longer than they admit to.”

Best for: New starter who seems anxious about ramping up quickly.

First week from another city

“Welcome to the team. Starting remotely means the incidental context takes longer to reach you, so I would rather over-explain than leave gaps — tell me if I am doing either. Happy to take a call any time this week.”
